Locks

Many of the locks on the River Stour have been removed, meaning that the river has reverted back to a fairly shallow and natural river.

There are three locks on the Stour that are still operated today. The lock at Stratford St Mary is currently being restored.

  1. Great Cornard Lock
  2. Stratford St Mary Lock (currently under restoration by the River Stour Trust).
  3. Dedham Mill Lock
  4. Flatford Mill Lock

Navigating through the locks

You must not operate the locks on the River Stour yourself.

Instead please give the Environment Agency advanced notice if you wish to pass through any of the locks.  You can call the river inspector on 07889 111 829.

The River Stour Trust may also be able to operate the locks on the River Stour on request.
