Couple cycling

The lanes and bridleways around the River Stour make it a fabulous area for cyclists. So dust off your bike and get cycling in this picturesque part of the country today!

You could cycle all or part of the 60 mile Stour Valley Path or the Painters Trail.

For a small fee you can get copies of these trails from the Dedham Vale and Stour Valley Project.

Packs are also available from local tourist information centres in Flatford, Hadleigh and Sudbury.  They include a map of the 67 mile cycle route in the valley, points of interest and refreshment amenities.

See Sustrans for other opportunities for cycling near the River Stour and links with the National Cycle Network.

Cycling rules

It's great fun to cycle in the Stour Valley. But don't forget these hints and tips to make it enjoyable for you and others:

  • There may be certain places where cycling is banned - make sure to look out for signs indicating if cycling is not allowed.
  • We recommend not using cycle paths after dark, however if you do, please use front and rear lights.
  • When cycling in rural areas, beware of thorny hedge trimmings at certain times of the year as these can often cause a puncture.
  • If cycling on bridleways be aware that walkers and riders take priority. Make sure you give way to other users.
